RYASAP and HMA partnership turn struggles into impactful, inspiring art.

Bridgeport, Conn. (June 6, 2024) – The Regional Youth Adult Social Action Partnership (RYASAP) is excited to announce the "We Rise: Overcoming Challenges, Manifesting the Future Through Art" exhibition, in collaboration with the Housatonic Museum of Art (HMA). This special event showcases the talents of 10-15 students who have been working diligently over the past few months to create inspiring artwork.

The exhibition is open to the public from Wednesday, June 5, through Friday, August 2, on the 3rd floor of Beacon Hall at CT State Housatonic. Visitors can enjoy the exhibition free of charge during museum hours, which are weekdays from 8:30 AM to 7:00 PM. The opening reception took place on Wednesday, June 5, from 5:30 PM to 7:00 PM.

Over the past few months, young artists from Bridgeport communities have tackled various personal and collective challenges through their creative process. Their participation in the "We Rise: Overcoming Challenges Through Art" exhibition has provided them with a meaningful outlet to express their experiences. This exhibition not only celebrates their artistic achievements but also highlights their resilience and strength. Guided by dedicated mentors, these students have transformed their struggles into powerful and impactful pieces of art.

Marvin Y. Verano, one of the featured artists, reflects on his experience: "This is my second time doing the art show. This experience offered a much different perspective and I felt more reflective, particularly going back to my old neighborhood of Marina Village and seeing the buildings knocked down, but I am still standing."

Jasmine Acevedo, another participating artist, shares her journey: "Joining the RYASAP program has motivated me to pursue my interest more seriously. This will be my second art show at Housatonic, and I've been more intentional with my paintings since 2023."

"In the 'We Rise' exhibition, we witness more than just art, we see and feel the resilience and strength of our youth. Through creative expression, these young artists have transformed their challenges into masterpieces, showcasing not only their talent but also their spirit. This exhibition is a testament to the power of mentorship and community support in guiding our young people towards a brighter future,” state Marc Donald, Executive Director and CEO of RYASAP.

“The Housatonic Museum of Art is proud to host this important exhibition that demonstrates the impact that art can have on the lives of young people. We are proud of the artists and are grateful to the Eileen Harris Norton Foundation for making this exhibition possible, as well as the support of Milford Photo,” stated Jennifer Reynolds-Kaye, Director of the Housatonic Museum of Arts.

The exhibition is a testament to the importance of mentorship and support in helping young people overcome challenges and grow through creative expression. It aligns with RYASAP’s commitment to fostering positive change in the greater Bridgeport area by addressing the challenging issues that youth, families, and communities often face.
